This year, Mother's Day falls on Sunday, May 12th. Mother's Day is about honoring mothers everywhere.
Although various forms of Mother's Day have been celebrated in history, it wasn't an official holiday until 1908. In the 1800s, the old tradition wasn't in honor of mothers, but for organizing pacifist women against the war. It was sometimes referred to as "Mother's Day Proclamation."
Then, in 1908, Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in America and campaigned to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the U.S. It is now celebrated all over the world with people offering a gift, card, or remembrance to their mothers, grandmothers, and maternal figures on Mother's Day.
Just for fun, here are some random facts about mothers:
- Mother's Day is the 3rd most popular holiday after Christmas and Easter.
- The carnation is the official flower of Mother's Day- red if the mom is still living and white if she has passed away was the tradition.
- It's the busiest day of the year for restaurants
- More phone calls happen on Mother's Day than any other day of the year, the majority of the calls were made collect, so mom still had to pick up the charges!
- The median age for giving birth to a first child is 24.8, meaning that 50% are under that age and 50% are older.
- The odds of delivering twins is 1 in 33 and triplets is 1 in 539
- August is the most popular month for giving birth and Tuesday is the most popular day of the week.
- 4.3 babies are born every second.
- The average woman in the 17th century gave birth to 13 children.
- The record for the longest interval between the birth of two children is 41 years and 185 days. The 1st child was born on May 19, 1956 and the 2nd child was born on November 20, 1997. The mother was 60 yrs old when she gave birth to her 2nd child.
- The highest recorded amount of children to one mother is 69. Russian mom gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets between 1725 and 1765. Sadly, 2 babies didn't survive infancy, but with the limited medical technology back then it's amazing that 67 survived.
- The biggest baby born was a 22 lb 8 oz boy!
- In 2008, a 70 year old woman gave birth to her 1st child through IVF treatments.
